In the famous hadith on intention narrated by Umar Ibn Khattab (ra), Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:
“Verily, deeds are only with intentions. Verily, every person will have only what they intended. Whoever emigrated to Allah and his messenger, his emigration is for Allah and his messenger. Whoever emigrated to get something in the world or to marry a woman, his emigration is for that to which he emigrated.”[1] (Bukhari and Muslim)
Intention is one of the critical factors that we would be judged upon in the day of Judgement. Any good or religious deed, was it done to please Allah alone or to please others or for the sake of fame, money etc.? Such religious deeds done for others’ sake leads to the Hellfire, as Allah only accepts deeds done purely for His sake. This includes all religious deeds such as prayer, reading Qur’an, gaining religious knowledge and teaching it, giving charity or zakat, striving in Allah’s path and more. However, worldly...

Abraham Maslow, a social scientist noted that human beings are motivated by a hierarchy of needs. First, humans tend to satisfy these base physical needs such as food, water, shelter and reproduction that are required for survival. If these base needs are met, then he starts thinking about fulfilling his safety and security needs such as a source of livelihood, resources, security, health and property. If those are met, he wants to socialize and be a part of a family and community to attend to his social needs – the desire to belong and be loved. Within his social network, he or she then tends to seeks self-esteem and recognition from others. Once these needs are met, then he starts seeking self-actualization or reach his/her potential in their unique way.[1]
In Islam, we see that this theory, while affirming parts of it, needs to be modified. Our Creator has informed us that our ultimate purpose is to worship Him and without His remembrance, the soul...
Coping With Fear In The Pandemic Era
By Muhammad Javed
We clear see how fear is affecting decisions globally in an unprecedented way as the world, governments and individuals are trying to deal with the covid-19 crisis. People feel constrained by the shrinking economy and fear engulfs many on how they will feed their families or keep their businesses afloat and pay the salaries. This consists of financial constraints, movement restrictions, loneliness, helplessness, drastic change in their plans and some could also be dealing with domestic violence,”[1]. Look at some of the shocking statistics: Kosmo! Reported that in Malaysia a total of 266 people committed suicide nationwide during the movement restrictions between Mar 18th and Oct 30th.[2] In many countries that keep a close watch on suicide rates, they have...
